Cher Ami is the pidgeon. The men involved were the subject of the movie "The Lost Battalion." A frighteningly good movie about a horrible battle. Really catches the chaos and horror of war. (Ricky Schroeder starred as the Major in the movie.)
Cher Ami used to be a name known to most all Americans. I heard about the bird when I was growing up, but only learned about the battle when the movie was released.
